City Guide: Entebbe
Beauties of tropical nature awaiting to be discovered and the brilliant colors of wildlife come together in Entebbe. Entebbe is located in the southern region of Uganda, north of Lake Victoria. The town, situated 37 kilometers south of the country’s capital city Kampala, renews itself every day. In Uganda, “Entebbe” means seat which is a ''Luganda'' word. This language, also known as “Ganda”, is spoken by more than 10 million people. Entebbe has a fairly stable climate where the temperature does not fluctuate more often. While the temperature stays within the range of 17-27 °C, a moderately humid weather dominates. There is a rainy season from March until May, also another rainy season at the end of the year , during November and December.

Tourist Attractions
Lake Victoria is a frequented spot for visitors not only for swimming; but also for fishing. The view from the golf course next to it is quite unforgettable. You have the option to join those challenging themselves in water sports at the Beach Resort next to the lake as well. It may be a nice experience to participate in the daily chimpanzee tours to Ssesse Islands and Ngamba Island or one of the other trips that are organized allover the wonders.
Tours are organized to observe the tropical birds, black-and-white colobus and other kinds of monkeys that live in a small forest reservation next to a place called Kitubulu. You can join one of these or also visit the Wildlife Education Center to bear witness to the rich variety of plants and animals in Uganda’s nature. http://www.uweczoo.org/. Locals of Entebbe have picnics in the Botanical Gardens. You, too, can take a trip in this protected area, where the movie Tarzan was filmed, and take your share of what nature has to offer. -
Culture & Entertainment
As you will be very close to the capital city, Kampala, you may want to make the trip even only for the coffee houses. Indian Quarter, located in Kampala, is worth a visit especially for its old avenues and streets. Fridays and Saturdays are devoted to local musicians, while Sundays are for national dance performances. Also, National Theatre hosts improvisation shows open to all musicians on Mondays.
If you are traveling to Entebbe during the month of February, do not miss the shows organized for “Dance Week”. On the other hand, if your travel plans are for the month of May, you can see films featured in Amakula Film Festival organized here as well. It is important to point out that Amakula Film Festival is a worldwide festival that is internationally acclaimed. If you are visiting around the New Year’s, you have a chance to listen to religious music and church choires accompanied by the harp. Also, we must say that the city looks like a shopping festival at that time of the year.
In addition to well-known holidays such as New Year’s Day and Labor Day; NRM Liberation Day, National Heroes’ Day, and Independence Day are celebrated on January 26th, June 9th, and October 9th respectively. -
Food & Drink
In most of the restaurants on the way to Kampala, you can try dishes from the Ugandan cuisine. Matooke made of green bananas, muchomo -which highly resembles grilled meat, and malakwang-spinach dish with a peanut and lemon sauce are among possible delicious dishes to try. Tilapia –fried or baked with tomatoes- and luwombo -chicken cooked in banana leaves- are among the among the interesting dishes to try out. -
Shopping
Kitoro Market is a must see to capture local colors and tastes. Make sure to devote a Tuesday to see the lively Kitooro. Although you may not be able to take home the beautiful nature of Entebbe, you can build your own zoo filled with miniature animals. These very well-made wooden miniatures are for sale. Hats, bags, and clothing made of soft tree barks are other items you may be interested in buying. You definitely will want to bring a bag of the locally-grown coffee back home with you.
Ugandan merchants welcome their guests always with a smiling face and by saying “Jambo.” The word means “Hello” in Swahili. The currency used for trading is the ''Ugandan shilling'', abbreviated as ''UGX''. The best way to get to and from somewhere in Entebbe is the motorcycle taxis called ''boda boda''.
