City Guide : Barcelona

Barcelona holds a place at the northeastern of the Iberian Peninsula along the edge of Mediterranean. Barcelona founded in 230 B.C. has a history longer than Spain. Considering both size and population, Madrid is the largest city of Spain. Both Spanish and Catalan are spoken in the city.

  • Tourist Attractions

Barcelona is wholly a Mediterranean City through its all aspects, culture, history, tradition and geography. The first comers are surprised at the diversified and telescoped structure of the city. Modernism and nostalgia are the source of the harmony encompassing all around the city. The incorrupt Gothic streets, buildings, and structures and the modern grid-like atmosphere of the city compose the versatile nature of Barcelona.

La Rambla, also named as Las Ramblas, comprises about 2 km long pedestrian boulevards composed of 5 connected streets. It is the most famous, hilarious, fervent and, in some parts, noisy location at Barcelona. Here, there are cafes, museums, malls, street musicians, buskers, mimes and jewelers. Palau de la Virreina (bird market), Mercat de la Mercat market, Monument a Colom, Museu Maritim and more are placed at this fabulous place.

La Pedrera at L'Eixample a Guadi is a masterpiece built in 1905-1910. The quarry is perceived as Spanish wave because of its pompous iron balconies. This significant house includes a museum demonstrating Gaudi's work and a roof offering wondrous views of Barcelona.

La Sagrada Familia at L'Eixample is a religious and spiritual structure constructed by Antoni Gaudi, the Barcelona's popular guy. The cathedral is an inspired building with its sculptures.

Museum Picasso (Picasso Museum) at La Ribera is the most frequently visited museum of the city. The art gallery houses the works of Picasso, in essence his life and experiences. Especially, Picasso's Blu Period is demonstrated in the museum via the artist's works of this term.

La Font Magica (fountain) at Montjuic is a significant monument of Barcelona. Montjuic teems with fountains lined up as a set. It is admired as a magic monument at summer evenings due to its fire evoking appearance.
  • Culture & Entertainment

Bullfight and flamenco are firstly recurred to mind when taking the city culture into consideration. The bullring at the Centrum is enticing for the tourists visiting the city.

Sardanas is a significant Catalan dance. The occupants of the city meet in front of the cathedral on Sundays to dance.

La Merce Festival (24 September) is held for the Barcelona's saint as the day of La Merce. Quite different kinds of organizations and activities are actualized at this day.

Barcelona brims over bars, cafes, clubs and discotheques. Jazz, rock, flamenco and salsa is inevitable to be exposed to in a great deal of bars and discotheques placed at the city.

The Popble Espanyol Village offers one of the most prominent nights. Between Calle Pau Claris and Calle Aribau, there are plenty of bars, discotheques and different kinds of entertainment places. You will be able to find all kinds of atmospheres, ambiances and diversified music at these entertainment places.
  • Food & Drink

Coffee and pastry is more preferable for breakfasts. All the alternatives are available for lunch and dinner. The city teems with innumerable restaurants and eateries offering a great range of seafood, vegetables, meat and fruits.

You will find a variety of drinks in the city cuisine. Coffee, tea, soft drinks (orange juice, chocolate ice-cream...), wine, beer, and the Spanish and world famous brand drinks is boiled in the city.

  • Shopping

Antiques, art, books, clothing and fabrics, crafts, design, furniture, jewelers, music, musical instruments, cosmetics, photography, shoes, souvenirs, famous Spanish brands and world wide famous brands are sold at countless shopping places and by innumerable malls in Barcelona.

Avenida Diagonal harbors modern malls such as Barcelona Glòries and Diagonal Mar. Passeig de Gràcia Boulevard is home to designer shops. El Born district is filled with local designer boutiques.

The city's shopping world is lived through its markets, too. La Boqueria (vegetables and fruits) and Avinguda Portal de l'Angel (antiques, accessories) are among the main shopping markets of the city.

Nermin Yıldırım’s Barcelona

How did Barcelona transform your dreams? In my novels, dreams serve as a road map for reality and nights as a road map for the day. It is in that sense that Barcelona has influenced my dreams. It is a tolerant and laid-back city. It drew me in a little and softened my edges. Naturally it also had an effect on my realities and on my dreams. You say that Catalan culture has miraculous beauty. What is it like? We Turks have a lot in common with Catalans. Catalans are extremely cheerful, open-hearted, voluble people who are full of life. They place value on their history, their culture and human relations. What makes a place beautiful above all else is the people who live there. And the Catalans have made aesthetics and enjoyment of life almost into a cultural legacy. The master-architect Gaudi turned Barcelona into a fairy tale city, but it didn’t stop there. What festivals are there in Barcelona this summer? In August each one of Barcelona’s neighborhoods is transformed into a big fairground. Every quarter holds its own festival for a week. The streets are decorated and there are concerts, contests and parties. The most spectacular one of all is at Gracia, August 15 to 21.
