City Guide: Jeddah
Located on the Red Sea coast, Jeddah is the second largest city of Saudi Arabia after Riyadh. It is placed at the west coast of country, close to the holly cities (for Muslims) of Mecca and Medina. Standing as a cosmopolitan and modern city, it has been a major port city throughout the history. Jeddah is thought to be the commercial capital of Saudi Arabia.-
Tourist Attractions
Jeddah is a city where luxury is the most conspicuous aspect. The excellent seven-star hotels, modern buildings, wide boulevards, the ancient old city and the medieval buildings on the Red Sea coast are among the most impressive and fabulous respects.
Although the modern structures occupy the old city, this part of Jeddah is garnished by traditional houses. Al-Balad, the historical area of the city, has majestic skyscrapers and historical buildings side by side. The most interesting traditional houses built of coral reefs from the Red Sea are Sharbatly House and Naseef House.
Built in 1980s, the King Fahd Fountain spraying the water to the 312 m high is placed at the harbor. It is the world’s tallest fountain. It is spectacular, especially, at night through its illuminated color jets.
The National Commercial Bank built in 1983 is one of the highest towers in Saudi Arabia. It is the first bank of the country. Also, Jeddah Municipality Tower being the headquarter of the metropolitan Jeddah is another high tower in Saudi Arabia.
Jeddah has a great deal of resorts. Durrat Al-Arouse is the most prominent one. This tourist village is home to commercial centers, shops, hotels, resorts, theme parks, golf clubs and a great deal more. -
Culture & Entertainment
Jeddah is a cosmopolitan city, mostly, due to being a significant port city at the Red Sea coast. Also, by flying, it is two hours away from the capitals of neighbor countries. Religion has a special place in the social life of the city. More than one thousand mosques are existed at Jeddah.
Placed opposite the National Commercial Bank of the Old City, Municipality Museum is one of the few buildings remaining from the British term.
Jeddah hosts many public and private schools. British International School, King Abdulaziz University, Arab Open University, Effat College and Islamic Fiqh Academy are a few examples.
The oldest sport clubs in Saudi Arabia are placed at Jeddah. Al-Ittihad built in 1928 is the first club of the country. This club and Al-Ahli are the most popular and competitor clubs in Saudi Arabia. -
Food & Drink
Jeddah is filled with restaurants from all the imaginable cuisines. Italian, Middle Eastern, Persian, French, local and many more cuisines offer unprecedented delicacies. As a natural consequence of different races living in the city, Jeddah has a diversified traditional cuisine.
Nejdi Kabsa and Yemeni Mandi are the most popular lunch meals of the traditional cuisine. Grilled meat is pretty popular. Shawarma, Kofta and Kebab are this kind of foods. Also, you will find the world-famous fast food chains. -
Shopping
Placed at the midtown of Jeddah, Tahliya is the main shopping street of Jeddah. This significant fashion street is home to a great deal of upscale department stores and boutiques of the world-known brands. Al-Balad hosts many luxury shopping centers, traditional street vendors and open-air souks.
Mahmood Saeed Alandalus is one of the biggest shopping malls of Jeddah.
