City Guide: LagosPlaced on the coastal plain of Benin Bight and on the southwest part of Nigeria, Lagos is the most crowded urban area in Nigeria. Lagos is a big metropolis placed on islands such as Lagos Island, Ikoyi and Victoria. Lagos Lagoon is placed at the southeast of the city. At the south, Lagos is surrounded by long sand spits protecting the city from Atlantic Ocean. The territorial land of Lagos is separated by many creeks which pour in the ocean by passing through the sand bars.
Tourist AttractionsThe residential areas and geographic structure of Lagos is not so simple, but striking. The Five Cowrie Creek separates Lekki Peninsula and Victoria Island with Ikoyi and Lagos Islands. The Third Mainline Bridge spreading a few kilometers over the Lagos Lagoon connects the islands to the mainland.
Lagos Island is home to a great deal of large markets in Lagos. The Oba’s Palace, Central Mosque and Tinubu Square are placed at this island. Tinubu has a historical importance.
Placed at the east of Lagos Island, Ikoyi is home to the headquarters of the federal government and the other government buildings. It hosts one of the biggest golf courses in Africa.
Located at the south of Lagos Island, Victoria Island is the part of the city where most of expatriate population of the city lives. The island is home to movies theaters and big shopping malls.
Lekki Conservation Center placed on the Lekki Peninsula is home to various monkeys, crocodiles, bush bucks, antelopes, giant rats and a great deal more animal species.
Culture & EntertainmentThe National Museum placed at the center of the city on Lagos Island is home to an amazing collection of bronze sculptures and ivory carvings from the Benin era. Also, the world-famous Treasures of Ancient Nigeria are found here.
Nike Art Center is one of the best places to study arts. Beadwork, painting, carving, embroidery, metalwork, weaving, drumming are among the traditional arts to experience here.
National Theater and Gallery located at Igamu is the main location of performing arts in Nigeria. The major auditorium can host 3,000 people while the conference hall has a capacity of 700.
Tarkwa Bay Beach is placed along the Lagos harbor. This recreative and refreshing beach has deckchairs and tents to rent.
Food & DrinkIn addition to the Nigerian cuisine, the rich international and continental delicacies are pretty tasty. The local beer is pleasant enough to drink accompanied by the specialities.
The restaurants of Victoria Island are the best places for upscale tastes. Awolwo Road is one of the most ideal places for a diverse nightlife and magnificent restaurants offering from the world cuisine.
ShoppingVictoria Island is famous for its commercial district of the biggest malls of Nigeria. The luxurious galleries, modern shops and the locations selling antique objects are the reflections of this shopping area. Also, Ikoyi Island is a fashionable place targeting the upper class.
Lagos Island is home to a great deal of large markets in Lagos. Lekki Market is the best place for the cultural artifacts such as bead and cloth.
