Star Alliance Upgrade Award General Rules And Conditions

  • Star Alliance Upgrade Award can only be booked via internet. Upgrading is not possible at check-in or prior to board the aircraft.
  • In case of cancellation or rebooking, passenger need to contact the relating operating airline sales office.
  • Passenger needs to contact Turkish Airlines Sales Office for the itinerary changes (changes on flight times/dates, cancellation or re-routing) if the Star Alliance Upgrade has been issued for a Turkish Airlines flight. 
  • Upgrades are valid for the next higher class of service; double upgrades are not permitted. 
  • For the Star Alliance Upgrade Award on Star Carriers, members may request upgrades from paid Economy to Business or from paid Business to First according to the operating airline’s regulation.
  • On three-class aircraft, you may upgrade from paid Economy to Business or from paid Business to First. 
  • On two-class aircraft, you may upgrade from paid Economy to Business or First according to the operating airline’s regulation. 
  • Star Alliance Upgrade Awards are available only from fares booked in Y and B on Turkish Airlines flights.
  • Upgrade awards may not be used on Miles&Smiles award tickets.
  • Star Alliance Upgrade Award cannot be used on industry discount, agency discount, free, or award tickets..
  • The paid ticket must be issued on the above mentioned booking classes to request a Star Alliance Upgrade. 
  • No stopovers are permitted; upgrades are segment based, with one segment per award. 
  • Upgrades are valid only on participating Star Alliance carriers.
  • Travel on code share flights -- flights sold by one carrier and operated by another -- is excluded.
  • Star Alliance Upgrade Award must be requested maximum 355 days and minimum 24 hours before departure.
  • Miles&Smiles members may request Star Alliance Upgrade Award either for themselves or for any person. Sponsor (The Miles&Smiles members whose account shall be debited) is not required to travel with the passenger(s). 
  • Each Upgrade request is for max.4 passengers, 4 Sponsors (The Miles&Smiles members whose account shall be debited) and 1 segment.
  • Waitlists are not permitted.
  • Miles will accrue based on original class of service ticketed, not on upgraded class of service.
  • Star Alliance Upgrade Award is not permitted, if the reservation record includes certain special requests (Seat assignments, special meals, etc.). For such requests, passenger needs to contact the operating airline.
  • Miles required for the Star Alliance Upgrade Award is same for adults and children.
  • No voucher or a receipt shall be requested for the Star Alliance Upgrade Award.
  • Since Miles&Smiles Upgrade Award and Star Alliance Upgrade Award are different applications; their procedures, rules and required mileage amounts may differ.
  • No penalty shall be charged from the Passenger in case the Star Alliance Upgrade Award is cancelled or reservation changed.
  • Passenger shall follow the steps stated below for the Star Alliance Upgrade Award request.
1.Selects the number of Passenger(s) and Sponsor(s).
2.Enters the Miles&Smiles Membership Number and the Pin Code.
3.Enters the Passengers name/surname and the flight details whom the Upgrade is requested for.
4.Confirms the mileage amount that will be redeemed after the Star Alliance Upgrade Award request  is   completed.
5.Displays the miles redeemed and the information on the reservation record after the Upgrade.
