Changing The Lock On The Kaaba
AFTER 60 YEARS, THE LOCK ON THE DOOR OF THE KAABA WAS CHANGED IN A CEREMONY IN NOVEMBER.
The door of the Kaaba is opened twice a year, and the Kaaba cover is changed every year during the Hajj pilgrimage. The changing of the lock however is a rare event, carried out only at long intervals. This change happened on 29th of November. The cost of the new Kaaba lock, made of pure gold, was personally defrayed by the Saudi King, Abdullah ibn Abdulaziz.
HELD BY THE BANI SHAIBA FAMILY
Opened in a ceremony during the Islamic month of Muharrem, the door of the Kaaba was washed with attar of roses and Zamzam water. Following the changing of the lock, the key to the new lock was handed over to the head of the Bani Shaiba family of Mecca, which has held it in trust for fifteen centuries. After the conquest of Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad gave the key to the Kaaba to this family for safekeeping, saying, “O, Sons of Abu Talha, take this key in trust from Allah, to keep with you always and treat with honor. It shall not be taken from you unless by a tyrant.”
SPECIAL POUCH FOR THE KEY
The key to the Kaaba is preserved in a special pouch made by hand at the same factory that makes the Kaaba cover. Sultan Abdulhamid II had the last Kaaba key made during the Ottoman period.
