Introducing Mazar-i Sharif


The city has borders with Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Some Muslims believe that the city was named after the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Mazar-i Sharif gained importance in the 19thcentury following a disease outbreak which occurred in Balkh.
