In the southeast of the city, Third Mainland Bridge on the Lagos Lake links the islands to mainland. Lagos, which was the former capital of Nigeria, is protected from the wild waves of Atlantic Ocean by the dunes in the south. Creeks flowing between the dunes to the sea separate the residential areas from each other.
