Transporting musical instruments in cabin

Standard cabin baggage rules apply for the transportation of music equipment. Cabin baggage allowance (maximum weight 8 kg) can be used for music equipment whose total dimensions do not exceed 118 cm (width+length+height) with the carrying case.

The following policies apply to transporting cellos and similar musical instruments on all flights operated by Turkish Airlines, including flights departing from Türkiye to international destinations, international flights to Türkiye, and flights involving international connections:

  • Musical instruments may be transported as paid cabin baggage (CBBG) at the request of the passenger.
  • The instrument must weigh no more than 75 kg, with maximum dimensions of 140X42X25 cm.
  • Cello must be booked at our sales offices up to 48 hours before the flight; cabin baggage (CBBG) tickets must be issued, and extra seats must be purchased (Instruments cannot be booked via online channels).
  • If a passenger requests a CBBG when purchasing their ticket, a CBBG ticket can be issued with automatic billing through the same PNR.
  • If the passenger submits a CBBG request separately at a later date, a one-way or round-trip CBBG ticket can be issued in a separate PNR—independent of the passenger’s main trip—based on the fare of the class available on the request date, again through automatic billing.
  • A TCP (Total Complete Party) entry is made in both PNRs to ensure seat blocking during check-in.
  • CBBG sales are based on the fare of the class applicable on the date of the request.
  • The rules applicable to CBBG tickets apply to refund/change requests.

Transporting musical instruments as checked baggage

We transport your large instruments like contrabass in the aircraft hold as checked baggage. 

In order to transport such music instruments in the aircraft hold, you are required to deliver them in a durable hard case. The instruments you delivered during check-in are not loaded onto the conveyor belt, and we take special care to transport them safely. Please note that you are required to pay extra baggage fee if you exceed your baggage allowance. 

We know that transporting musical instruments requires special care and, as such, we take extra care while loading and unloading them from the aircraft. Make sure to pack your instrument in a hard case before checking it in or carrying it into the cabin in order to prevent it from getting damaged
