Transporting Musical Instruments

Our standard cabin baggage rules apply to the transport of musical instruments.

  • The free cabin baggage allowance is a maximum of 8 kg.
  • Including the carrying case, the total dimensions of the musical instrument cannot exceed 118 cm(width + length + height).

Special provisions apply to the transport of cellos and similar musical instruments on all flights operated by Turkish Airlines that depart from Türkiye to international destinations, depart from international destinations to Türkiye, or involve international connecting flights. These provisions are evaluated in accordance with the rules of the relevant flight and the conditions for carrying seat baggage in the cabin.

Loading Cabin Baggage

  1. For checked baggage to be carried in the cabin, a reservation must be made at least 48 hours before the flight, and a CBBG ticket must be issued.
  2. Musical instruments may weigh a maximum of 75 kg, with maximum dimensions of 140 × 42 × 25 cm.
  3. CBBG baggage other than musical instruments must also weigh no more than 75 kg and be within dimensions that fit under a seat (for example, 40 × 50 × 67 cm).
  • This baggage must be securely placed on the seat and fastened with a seatbelt to prevent it from moving during the flight.
  1. If the passenger requests CBBG when purchasing their ticket, a CBBG ticket can be issued through automatic billing via the same PNR.
  2. If the passenger submits a CBBG request separately at a later date, the fare for the class on the date of the request will be used as the basis.
  • Regardless of the passenger’s itinerary, a one-way or round-trip CBBG ticket can be issued via automatic billing in a separate PNR.
  1. A TCP (Total Complete Party) entry is made in both PNRs, and the relevant seats are blocked during check-in.
  2. For CBBG sales, the fare for the class on the date of the request is used as the basis.
  3. For refund and change requests, the rules for CBBG tickets apply.
  4. Baggage issued with a CBBG ticket is not eligible for mileage programs.

Transporting musical instruments as checked baggage

We transport large musical instruments, such as double basses, as checked baggage in the aircraft’s cargo hold.

In order to transport this type of musical equipment in the checked baggage compartment, you must present it at the check-in counter in a hard, durable carrying case.

This equipment is handed over during check-in and transported separately without using the standard baggage carousel.

Please note that if you exceed your baggage allowance, you will be required to pay an excess baggage fee for the relevant flight.

We know that transporting musical instruments requires special care and, as such, we take extra care while loading and unloading them from the aircraft. Make sure to pack your instrument in a hard case before checking it in or carrying it into the cabin in order to prevent it from getting damaged
