    Departure: London

London’s 2,000-year-old history ensures that this dynamic urban center has an abundance of historical sites. In addition, the city is a prominent hub for finance and industry, as well as arts, culture, entertainment and gastronomy. London has six airports: Southend (SEN), City London (LCY), Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (SEN), and Luton (LTN), four of which serve international flights. Turkish Airlines operates flights from Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Check out our post on Urban Transport: London for additional information.

    Arrival: Istanbul

Every day, hundreds of people visit Istanbul, a city that could be characterized as an open-air museum. Showcasing the masterpieces created by Sinan the Architect – along with ancient walls, subterranean cisterns, and thousands of other structures – the city is a unique crossroads of history and modernism, a caretaker of some of the world’s most precious treasures. Some of Istanbul’s loveliest sites are largely unknown: Cape Fenerbahçe, the groves that dot the city, and the smaller Princes Islands, for instance; while others, like the majestic Bosphorus and the splendid villas lining its shores, are among the city’s most recognized assets. Istanbul is served by two international airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). Turkish Airlines’ flights from London to Istanbul operate from Istanbul Airport (IST).

    Airport information

London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW)

Heathrow Airport, the city’s largest airport, is 26 kilometers west of London. The airport can be accessed via train, subway, bus or taxi. The fastest way to travel to the airport is via the Heathrow Express train, which runs between London Paddington station and the Heathrow Airport terminals. Another option is the Elizabeth line, which is a high-frequency hybrid commuter rail and rapid transit service running from Reading in Berkshire and Heathrow Airport in West London to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in Essex. The Tube (subway) also operates between London and Heathrow, as do National Express buses, which run between the airport and Victoria Coach Station at 30-minute intervals. Gatwick Airport, London’s second major airport, is 45 kilometers south of the capital. The Gatwick Express high-speed train operates between the airport and London Victoria Station at 15-minute intervals. In addition, National Express and Easybus buses operate 24-hours. Taxis are also available, although Gatwick’s relatively long distance from the city center may incur high fares.

    Istanbul Airport (IST)

Located in Arnavutköy, on Istanbul's European side, Istanbul Airport is approximately 42 kilometers from the Istanbul city center. After landing at the airport from London, you can reach the city center via the metro, taxis, municipal buses or airport shuttle buses or by renting a car. The IETT buses, numbered H-1, H-2, H-3, H-6, H-8, and the Gayrettepe - Istanbul Airport metro (M11) are convenient public transportation options operating between the airport and the city, as are the Havaist airport shuttles, which offer service to İstanbul Airport. Taxis are available 24-7 at the airport; the fare and length of the ride will depend according to your destination.
