Ohrid’s Ancient Theatre
The Ohrid Ancient Theater, built around 200 BC, is the region’s only Hellenistic theater. Used for gladiatorial fights during the Roman period, the theater was subsequently abandoned and forgotten throughout the Middle Ages. It was rediscovered in the 20th century and, today, the Ohrid Ancient Theater hosts concerts and festivals amid the stunning historical setting of Ohrid. The ancient theater, easily accessible due to its proximity to the city center, offers an experience that complements history and nature with a spectacular view of Lake Ohrid.
Kalemegdan Fortress
Kalemegdan Fortress, one of Belgrade’s historical landmarks, has stood throughout the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian eras, changing hands numerous times. Kalemegdan Fortress, a defensive citadel strategically located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, provides panoramic views of the city. The castle, which houses a military museum, park areas, and historical buildings, also offers an excellent view of the city at sunset.
Kotor Fortress
Kotor Fortress, one of Montenegro's most important historical Adriatic coastal structures, towers impressively over the city. Although visitors must climb approximately 1,350 steps to reach the castle, stunning views of the Bay of Kotor await at the top. Kotor Fortress, with its medieval walls, towers, and narrow passageways, is one of the most significant structures to bear witness to the region's history. At night, the illuminated castle reflects on the bay to magnificent effect.
Petrovaradin Fortress
Petrovaradin Fortress, located on the Danube River in Novi Sad, is one of Serbia's best-preserved historical buildings. The Austrian Empire built the castle in the 17th century, and it is known for its extensive network of underground tunnels. Today, the castle hosts the EXIT Festival, one of Europe's largest music festivals. The Petrovaradin Fortress's art galleries, cafes, and museums present visitors with a cultural and entertaining experience.
Monastir (Bitola) Military High School
Monastir (Bitola) Military High School, an important Ottoman-era military school in the Balkans, is historically significant as the alma mater of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Türkiye. Now a museum, the building is a must-see for anyone interested in learning about the period's military system. Additionally, Atatürk’s personal belongings, photographs, and documents from his educational career are displayed in the museum. After wandering the historic streets of Bitola, a visit to this special place offers insight into the histories of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye.
