Malta's strategic location has made it an important settlement throughout history, and it is still a popular tourist destination today as a result of its historical sites, warm climate, and well preserved natural ports. The islands declared independence from Britain in 1964, and later becoming a republic and member of the European Union. English is still widely spoken in Malta today and Maltese is the only official Semitic language in the EU.
