Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is built on a highland 2,000 meters above sea level. A planned city, Asmara has a number of distinctive modernist buildings. Among these notable structures are the Fiat Tagliero Building, a Futurist-style petrol station designed to evoke an airplane; the Cinema Impero, an Art Deco style movie theater erected in 1937; and the Lombard Romanesque-style Asmara Cathedral, built in 1923.
