Set amid mountains, steppes and deserts, Bukhara served as a capital of the Mongol, Sassanid and Qarakhanid empires and continues to be an important trade and cultural center in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The historic center of Bukhara, more than two thousand years old, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
